| PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE |
| |
As we head into the winter holiday season, we hope that you continue to be as pleased as we were with the great engagement and extremely successful Munich Members Meeting, hosted by OSRAM. In Munich, we learned and saw that not only is Thread solving real use cases and product challenges Here And Now in the home and commercial markets for individual organizations but also entire ecosystems are realizing Thread's potential.
During the opening plenary in Munich, we heard from industry leaders from two of the world's leading ecosystems, Zigbee and KNX, about how they are coming together around the common low power, wireless IP infrastructure provided by Thread to deliver the next generation of their ecosystems in Dotdot and KNX IoT, respectively. Only Thread could bring together two powerful competitors on the same stage on the same day!

| THREAD MEMBERSHIP AND IPR RIGHTS |
Of the questions the Thread Group help desk and Board of Directors receive from members and non-members alike, certification and intellectual property rights (IPR) questions are among the most frequent.

Recently, a number of members and non-members have asked, "When and under what circumstances precisely do I receive the royalty-free intellectual property rights (IPR) for Thread technology? Isn't membership enough to cover our organization?".

After careful review of the Thread Group's IPR policy, the Board confirms that membership alone is not sufficient.
To ensure we can keep the promise of broad interoperability made by our rigorous and meaningful Thread Certified Component and Built on Thread certification programs and marks, the Thread technology IPR grant is coupled tightly with our certification programs.
Consequently, to receive a Thread IPR grant from other Thread Group members and to enjoy the rights under that grant, which are typically royalty free, you must:
- Be a Contributor or Sponsor member. These are the two membership classes with access to our certification programs
-
Pursue certification for a specific, candidate component or product via one of the following:
- Testing at a Thread Group Authorized Test Lab (ATL), or
- Inheritance of an existing Thread component or product certification
- Achieve certification for the candidate component or product.
Then, and only then, is your organization granted IPR, typically royalty-free, for that specific certified component or product from other Thread Group members pursuant to the provisions of the IPR Policy.

Note that this clarification from the Board is not a substitute for consultation with your own legal counsel. Please refer to the Thread Group Intellectual Property and Confidentiality Policy for full details regarding IPR and Licensing provisions. The Thread Group IPR Policy is the controlling document relative to all IPR license provisions for Thread Group members.
Please visit our FAQs for more information and don't hesitate to contact Thread Group (help@threadgroup.org) with questions.
