WHY WE MADE THREAD

Thread was designed with one goal in mind: To create the very best way to connect and control products in the home.

It’s hard to get multiple devices to talk to one another. And until now, no one has been able to do it well.

Most of today’s technologies rely on a single device to communicate with products around the home. So if that device fails, the whole network goes down. Today’s technologies can also be difficult and confusing to set up. And since many devices around the home need to stay connected 24/7, they end up draining battery life quickly.

That’s why we designed Thread. We wanted to build a technology that uses and combines the best of what’s out there and create a networking protocol that can help the Internet of Things realize its potential for years to come.

We designed Thread to have these important features:

  • An open protocol that carries IPv6 natively
  • Based on a robust mesh network with no single point of failure
  • Runs over standard 802.15.4 radios

Grant Erickson is a principal engineer at Nest, where he oversees the technical development of software designed to support Bluetooth Low Energy, Thread, WiFi, and Nest Weave.

In his role, he was also an early contributor to the formation of the Thread Group and Thread networking protocol. He is currently a member of the Thread Group Board of Directors.

Skip is the Vice President of Software at Silicon Labs. He is responsible for managing the company's software and quality assurance teams, focusing on 8-bit and 32-bit MCU driver software and libraries, Ember ZigBee software and software for short-range sub-GHz wireless IC products.

Previously, Skip was the Vice President of Engineering and Technology at Ember before its acquisition by Silicon Labs in 2012. Prior to Silicon Labs and Ember, Skip held a variety of program management and engineering management roles focusing on high-quality product development.

Skip has been involved with ZigBee technology since 2004 and is a member of the ZigBee Board of Directors, the Chair of the ZigBee Technical Committee, and the Chair of the ZigBee Test and Certification Committee. Skip is on the Board of Directors of the Connected Lighting Alliance.

Previously he was a member of the Smart Grid Architecture Committee with NIST for development of Smart Grid standards. Skip has been heavily involved in the development of the ZigBee PRO stack, ZigBee Home Automation profile, and the ZigBee Smart Energy 1.0 and 2.0 profiles. Skip graduated with a mechanical engineering degree from Georgia Institute of Technology and spent five years in the US Navy Nuclear Program

Prior to this role, Sujata worked in business development and product marketing for NXP's i.MX applications processors. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

Bill is a systems architect with experience ranging from tiny embedded devices to high-performance computing environments. He is currently focused on integrating those two worlds.

Landon’s day-to-day work includes collaborating with the company’s engineering team on Internet-connected lighting and fan products including the Haiku® with SenseME™ smart ceiling fan.

Landon has 15 years of experience in product development and integration, from wireless multi-function printers for the home to thermal imaging devices for first responders. Prior to joining Big Ass Solutions, Landon worked for Bullard as an electrical systems engineering manager as well as an electrical development engineer for Lexmark International. He holds a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Kentucky.

Mark is Principal Research Engineer within the Samsung R&D team. Mark has spent the past 4 years on IoT focused activities, initially Smart Energy specific but broadening into more general Smart Home, other IoT Verticals and IoT enabling platforms and technologies. As part of his work scope he's participated in Smart Home standards bodies, presented at Trade Shows, participated in multi-company activities with respect to developing common profiles for Smart Appliances and researched and created PoCs for potential new Smart Home technologies.

Mark has also worked into various diverse standards groups including: UPnP, CEA, 3GPP, CableLabs (PacketCable and OpenCable), SIPForum, IETF etc. Mark is currently also the Chair of the Smart Home Task Group within OIC. Prior to joining Samsung, Mark spent 16 years working for Nortel in both the UK and the US.

In 2001, he Co-Founded Airgo Networks Inc. a start-up company based in Palo Alto CA; the first company to successfully commercialize MIMO technology for the WLAN market. Airgo was acquired by Qualcomm, in December 2006. He is currently a Senior Director in Qualcomm’s connectivity semiconductor business and he also serves on the Wi-Fi Alliance Board of Directors.

Frederick Morency has almost 20 years of experience at Schneider Electric. In 1997 he began his career with Schneider Electric in the Field Services organization based in Montreal. In 2001 he moved to Grenoble, France where he joined the Power Monitoring and Control organization as the Business Development Manager for the Asia Pacific. In 2005 as part of the acquisition of Power Measurement (Victoria, Canada) he was responsible to transfer Power Measurement commercial distribution channel to Schneider Electric's front offices around the world. In 2006, he took the European Business Development Manager role for the Power Monitoring and Control until June 2009. In mid 2009, Frederick became the Program Manager of EcoStruxure corporate initiative with-in Strategy and Innovation organization. He joined the Building Business organization in March 2012 as the Director of Offer Marketing for the Room controller and Web BMS solution based in Montreal, Canada. And at the beginning of 2013 he was appointed as the VP of Small Building Systems Line of Business with Schneider- Electric Building Division and he is the President of Viconics Technologies following the acquisition of SCL Elements.
